Frequently Asked Questions
Below is a list of questions often asked at appointments! If you have any other questions for us, feel free to shoot us a message and we'll reply at our earliest availability!
Before your appointment...
- Please ensure your face is free of makeup upon arrival for your appointment! Any residue or debris on the skin can cause issues with our services, retention, etc -- we do have cleansers available for use as needed!
- Please ensure you are not wearing contact lenses for appointments concerning lash services, as the contacts may become irritated from having your eyes closed. We do have saline solution available for use if you do not have a case to put your contacts into.
- Please feel free to bring headphones and listen to a podcast / audiobook / music during your appointment! Many appointments take upwards of 1 hour+ to complete, so this can be an easier way of passing the time for clients who may have difficulty laying still.
- On that note, please also ensure you are wearing comfortable clothing for your appointment! The room may be somewhat chilly in order to maintain the proper climate for our adhesive, and though a blanket and bedwarmer are provided, it never hurts to ensure you're in something cozy already.
- Please avoid caffeine as much as possible prior to your appointment. Caffeine can cause the eyes to twitch unconsciously, which makes delicate services such as lash extensions difficult to complete.
Questions related to lash health...
Will lash extensions / lash lifts damage my lashes?
- Nope! Properly performed lash extensions and lash lifts are not harmful to the lashes, and our Keratin based lash lift is actually known to help nourish the natural lash thanks to the vegan keratin formula that conditions the lash!
- As our lash extensions are expertly applied, there is no issue with itchy eyes or crusty sensations that might come from poorly isolated extensions. Most clients say they barely feel their extensions, which is the goal!
I've heard of reactions / allergies to lash lift adhesives. How common are these and how can I avoid them?
- In 10 years of providing extension services, I've only had 3 cases of clients developing an allergy to lash extension adhesive. It is very rare, but unfortunately not impossible to develop an allergy.
- There is no way to avoid an allergy. Much like reactions to the Cedar in Austin, your body may simply not agree with extensions anymore and develop an allergic reaction. At this time, we recommend immediately proceeding with a removal.
I had a reaction to adhesive at another lash salon, will I have a reaction to your adhesive?
- As all adhesives (even the new UV adhesives on the market) have the main ingredient of cyanoacrylate ensuring a secure bond, there is a very high likelihood that once you have developed an allergy at one location, it will unfortunately remain with you for life.
- Outliers exist for this, though! If you developed an allergy during a medical change, while other allergies (ie, Cedar) were severe, or while you were going through a period of extreme stress, it is possible it was not a true allergy, but rather one caused by exacerbation of sensitivity to the environment.
- Still, we do not want to risk causing another allergic reaction -- if you would like to attempt extensions again, please schedule a free consultation and we can apply a handful of lashes to each eye to test if a reaction develops.
Has anyone ever had a reaction to a lash lift?
- Not that I have seen, but if you're worried, please feel free to schedule a free consultation and we can perform a patch test on the skin of your arm. Please keep in mind that the solutions never actually touch skin, only the lashes, so this test is somewhat more intensive that what the process would actually be like, but it's always better to be safe than sorry!
I've seen results of lash lifts that look overcurled / bent / too stick straight. Is that going to happen if I get a lash lift with you?
- Nope! Between having 20+ different mold sizes and shapes and our gentle (vegan + cruelty-free) keratin lash lift formula, the only lift you'll get is the best lash lift ever!
- Typically, overcurling occurs either if a lash was overprocessed or if the mold size used was too small. At Tailored Lash Atelier, we are incredibly detail-oriented and ensure to watch the lashes closely during the processing time, though again with our nourishing process it is effectively impossible to overprocess the lashes. And we always ensure to measure the lashes as well, prior to applying our molds, to ensure they will not sit oddly once they are done being processed. If you find you are at all unsatisfied with the result once we have finished the process, please feel free to let us know and we can always schedule you for a complimentary redo -- we always want to get as close to perfect as possible, so please don't feel shy about questions or concerns.
Questions related to service aftercare...
What is the proper aftercare for...
- A tint? Nothing! Tints work similarly to hairdye and thus have been absorbed by the hair follicle, thus nothing can cause a tint to come off the hair prematurely! If you would like to keep the tint's stain on your skin (from a brow tint), you may want to avoid scrubbing the brows or washing them with any acid-based cleanser (e.g., glycolic, mandelic, etc), but outside of that, nothing will remove tint other than the passage of time as your hairs shed and regrow.
- A wax? Be gentle with the area! Try to avoid applying makeup to the area for the following 24-48 hours if possible, and if not, ensure to cleanse the area thoroughly so the hair follicles do not become clogged and lead to breakouts. Try not to excessively touch the area, as oil from your fingers can cause similar issue.
- A lash lift? Ensure to keep your lashes dry for the following 12 hours, e.g. avoid washing the eyes, getting water on the eyes, or sweating / performing an intense workout. After that, you're all clear to return to your usual routine! Feel free to apply conditioner on the lashes if you would like to, as that plus brushing can assist maintain the position of your lashes for longer, though it is by no means necessary.
- What if I feel like my lash lift fell?
As a lash lift is a chemical process, there is an uncommon risk that it may not take to the natural lash. If your lift does not take, the lift will "drop" within the first 3 days following your appointment. If this happens, please feel free to reach out and we will bring you in for a complimentary redo!
- Lash extensions? After your appointment, it is totally fine to get your lashes wet, so make sure you are starting off from day 1 with a good cleanse for your lashes! You'll want to cleanse your lashes every day regardless of whether or not you wear makeup to ensure there is no buildup on the lash line. To do this, please use an oil-free cleanser -- and no CeraVe, Cetaphil, or Micellar Water! These all have oily films despite not being oily that can create issues with retention.
Try to avoid rubbing your eyes or sleeping on your back as much as possible. This can cause a pulling sensation which may cause lashes to be removed prematurely.
Avoid excessive heat as that can cause the lashes to become warped. A trip to the sauna or a hairdryer is fine, but heat from a stove, over, or open fire should be avoided as much as possible.
Other frequently asked questions...
Can I get lash extensions / a lash lift if I have no lashes?
- Unfortunately, no. Lash extensions are attached to the natural lash, and lash lifts are performed on the natural lash, so without these, there is no process to perform. If you have few lashes, we can still do something with that! But you must have some hair to work with.
Have you had clients get extensions after chemotherapy?
- After a consultation with their doctor, yes! Clients typically wait 6 months post chemotherapy to receive any services to the lashes, as this allows enough time for the hairs to return to a normal strength.
- We will update you about the condition of your natural lashes at the initial consultation as well as during following appointments -- our primary goal is keeping your natural lashes as healthy and happy as possible, so transparency is key!
Can I get lash extensions / lash lifts if I am pregnant / breastfeeding?
- Please consult your doctor for a final say!
- I have performed lash lifts and extensions in both cases without issue. That said, overall I would recommend avoiding these services while you are pregnant, as you are required to lay on your back for an hour+ at a time and it can become uncomfortable.
